off-the-books income是没有入账的、用以逃税的正常管理之外的收入。Books在这里是“账簿”的意思，off-the-books也就是指“不入账的”。“黑色收入”是illegal income（不法收入）；“白色收入”是legitimate income（合法、合理的收入）；灰色收入是介于这两者之间的收入。
