Here is a question for you. What will one bat do to keep out another bat from its food source? Do you know the answer? Let me tell you. The answer is “Jam(干扰) the others’ signals’!
This is not a trick question. Bats move and hunt in the dark. They use echolocation(回声定位) or sound waves to learn where the others are from and where their food source are. Sometimes the competition for food may be fierce. When the food competition is fierce, bats can use their special sound to jam the signals of others. They can even have their own special signal jammed back. Scientists studied bats and noticed an interesting fact. Some kinds of bats such as the Mexican free-tailed bats give out a special call that can influence the sound signals of other bats that are searching for food. Scientists have known that bats can use their calls to watch their prey(猎物) and tell directions in the dark, but this is the first time they have discovered that bats can use their sound to win in a food fight.
Besides bats, other mammals such as whales,dolphins,shrews and tenrecs as well as birds such as oilbirds and swiftlets are known to use echolocation to tell directions,find their living places and search for food.
