Oliver Twist ,one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens’, is a novel describing the special experience of an orphan and the cruel and dark society of 1830s in England.
The main character of the novel, Oliver Twist,is born in a workhouse and spend his unhappy childhood there. Later, he is taken by the local undertaker as an apprentice, While can not bear Noah Claypole ( the undertaker's other apprentice) and Mrs. Sowerberry (the undertaker’s wife)’s abuse ,Oliver hits Noah and then runs towards London early at the next day’s morning. On his way to London, Oliver meets a boy named Jack Dawkins, he helps Oliver when he is tired and hungry and takes him to an old gentleman. After meets the old man in a broken house in a narrow and muddy street in London and lives there for several days, Oliver realizes he lives with a gang of thieves. One day Oliver is falsely convicted of stealing .Luckily, Mr. Brownlow, the man whose handkerchief is stolen, proves that Oliver is not the thief and takes him to his home and looks after well. At the same time , Mr. Brownlow feel surprised that Oliver resembles to a picture of a young woman which hangs in his house. But good times do not last long, two young adults in Fagin's gang find Oliver and return him to Fagin. Oliver is sent to assist Sikes in a burglary and is shot by a servant of the house and then is taken in by the women who live there, Mrs. Maylie and her beautiful adopted niece Rose. Oliver spends a peace time in the countryside .Meanwhile, Fagin and a mysterious man named Monks are planning recapturing Oliver. Not long after , Oliver knows Monks is his' half brother and grabs his share of the family inheritance. At last ,with Mr. Brownlow’s help, Monks is forced to sign over Oliver's share to Oliver. Also, Fagin and other ruffians are justly punished. At the end of the story, Mr. Brownlow adopts Oliver, and they and the Maylies lead a happy lifein the countryside.
In this novel , Dickens successfully describes a series of people, such as Mr. Bumble, apprentice Noah, Monks and so on. The most successful one is Oliver Twist, he is a miserable person, he becomes an orphan just after his mother gives birth to him, and he has a unfortunate childhood and always feels starved and exhausted. However even in the worst circumstance , he still cling to his principles and be kind and friendly to others. So, As you give, as you receive. Oliver meets with many kind people, Mr. Brownlow , Mrs. Maylie and Rose Maylie all treat him like family. Certainly , kindness does not mean controlling one’s anger at any time. As we can see in this novel, when Noah insults Oliver’s mother, Oliver jumps up with anger, seizes Noah’s throat and hits him with all his strength and knocks him to the ground. Though even does not have any misty memories of his mother, Oliver loves her very much. Nancy is another highlight in the novel, she is a young woman who has
a complex psychology. She hates heartless cruelty and all treacherous, vicious, inhuman things, but she also has some special feelings for the thieves she grows with. When Mr. Brownlow and Mrs. Maylie advises her to leave the thieves she refuses although she is longing for this life because she does not want to betray these thieves.Lastly, she is killed by Sikes after she is found to tip off information to Oliver…
In this book, Oliver and Nancy are good representatives of kind people, they are born in misery, grow in the dark world that full of sins , but in their hearts there are always a pure world . All kinds of hardships does not make them fall or totally feel desperate. Finally, justice beats the evil forces, although Nancy died ultimately, it is her death that calls out the force of social justice and then Fagin’s gang’s disaster. So in this novel, Nancy's spirit has been sublimated. The representative of the wicked - Fagin, Monks, end up a tragic end.
This classic leaves a deep impression on me. No matter how bad or complex the world is , we should maintain a kind heart and the spirit of humanity.
