Passage One

Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

31. At first the author looked upon life as a process of getting. He formed his view of life because_______.

A. other people were selfish

B. he thought it exciting to get from others C. of his early education D. of his character

32. The author wrote a note of appreciation to the post office because________. A. he knew what such a note would mean to the post office. B. he had discovered giving-away made life more exciting C. he believed he would get something back by doing so D. the postman delivered an important letter in time 33. The post master promised___________. A. to make a new post office box for the author B. to let the author have a post office box C. to include the author’s name on the list D. to deliver the author’s mail to his home

34. The post master interfered because________. A. he overheard their conversation

B. he had received a lot of complaints for lack of boxes C. he was thankful for the letter the author had written D. he was proud of their good service

Passage Two

Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they provide him with wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts and floods.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to make money from trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And besides, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.

This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil---allowing the rain to sink in ---and also bind the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.

Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It set up the empire but, without its trees, its soil became poor and it grew weak. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced with floods and starvation.

35. What is the most important service of trees to man according to the passage? A. They help him make money.

B. They give him wood and other products. C. They help him prevent droughts and floods. D. They give him shade.

36. Why do forests in many parts of the world slowly disappear? A. New trees are not looked after properly. B. Many trees have been cut down by man.

C. Man has not paid enough attention to planting trees.

D. All of the above.

37. Why did the country mentioned in the passage suffer from floods and starvation? A. Because an empire was set up. B. Because the empire fell to pieces. C. Because it lost all its trees.

D. Because too much had been spent on wars.

38. Why does land become desert after all trees are cut down? A. Because nothing remains on land except floods.

B. Because there are no longer trees to keep the rain and protect the top-soil. C. Because too much rain sinks in and washes away the top-soil. D. Because roots of the trees break up the soil.

Passage Three

What will man be like in the future – in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time.

Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller.

Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change tool the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.

Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.

On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.

But what about hair? It will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald!

Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

39. The passage tells us about _____.

A. how man’s life will be in the future B. how future man will look like C. the fact that man’s organs will function differently in the future D. the fact that man is growing uglier as time passes 40. There is evidence that man is changing _____. A. man has been growing taller over the past 500 years

B. man has got stronger eyes than he ever had C. man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner D. man’s limbs are getting weaker because he tends to make less use of them 41. Man’s forehead will grow larger because _____. A. he will use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity

B. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time

C. he had rather narrow forehead a few hundred years ago D. he will have to use his brain more and more as time goes on 42. Future man will probably ______.

A. have smaller eyes B. have larger eyes C. see better D. gave to wear better glasses 43. The reason for believing that future man will be different is that he _____. A. is quickly changing B. never stops changing C. hopes for a change D. will live a different life
