Level: Junior Lesson type: Listening & Vocabulary

Name: Information about the students in this class: There are about 35 students in the class. They are in Grade 7 of 13 or14 years old. Many of them have been learning English at least for 5 years. They have different levels of English. Their first language is Chinese, most of them don't like answering the questions in class and some may not take active parts in the activities, especially speaking activity. One reason might be they are not used to speaking more in their class, so I will encourage and motivate them to make them get involved. In case it happens, I also need to monitor and praise the good models, so they can be able to do the tasks with confidence. Main aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to listen for gist, specific information and detail in the context of person’s physical appearance. Subsidiary aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to use the new vocabulary in spoken form in the context of person’s physical appearance. Personal aim(s): 1. Give clear and stage instructions. 2. Manage time properly for each stage to make sure that we have time to achieve the subsidiary aim. Materials and their sources: 1. Word cards (self-made) Word cards with new vocabulary : Teacher uses them to present new words and then stick them on the board as a reminder for students to practice with. 2. Handouts (self-made) (1). Handout1 with listening task1&2 (2). Handout 2 with listening task 3, 4 (3). Handout 3 with the task 5 and 6. (4). Handout 4 with the listening tapescript. 3. PPT designed by the teacher. slide1: with the topic slide 2-slide 11: Pictures of new words . slide12-18 : listening tasks slide 19-20: speaking tasks 4. the course book Go For It (Junior 7) Publisher: People's Education Press version of 2013-5 Page 49-51, Unit 9: What does he look like? 5. Try to watch students’ reaction to judge if they have got the meaning so as to move on quickly. I may spend more time than I have planned in the stage of presenting new words. Try to put the sentence structures in the stage of presenting new words as a way to highlight. Words some students know 1. lacking of weight 1. thin ( adj.) 2. being of delicate or slender build 2. slim (adj.) 3. of comparatively great physical weight 3. heavy (adj.) or density Words students don't know. 1. curly hair 1. of hair having curls or waves 2. straight hair 2. of hair having no waves or curls 3. obese 3. Excessively fat 4. lose weight 4. take off weight 5. put on weight 5. Gain weight 6. hairstyle 6. The arrangement of the hair 7. of medium height 7. Not too high or too short 8. of medium build 8. Become different in essence 10.the hair is not too long or short 10. medium length hair Sentence: Some words are old, even some new words are easy , but the new sentence patterns are not easy for them. Ss will find it hard to use the “is” , “have” in the right way Model the right one and drill more to make sure ss can pronounce them in a right way. What does ...look like? He/ She has /is ... Listen to the record one time to get the main idea. (listen two times) Listen two times to do task 2, ( true or false) Task 3. Listen and fill the blanks. (listen two times) Ask students to do task 4. The students try to answer the questions after listening again. Task1. What's the dialogue about? (Whole-class check) Task 2 , 3, 4. Peer check first and then Check together on PPT. 1. Some weak students may be off the speaking task. It needs the teacher to monitor well and give some help if students need. 2. How to check in an effective way? (Observe and watch Ss closely, find the best way to suit the Ss.) 3. How many times should the recorder play? (monitor) 4. The students may use “yellow hair” I should change to “blond hair”. 5. If the Ss use color to describe the hair. Pay attention to the order “long straight black hair.”
