课堂 II . 阅读理解:(每题10分,共30分) Exchange students
This year, about twenty-three hundred teenagers (young people aged 13 to 19) from all over the world will spend about ten months in US homes. They will attend US schools, meet US teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and learn about the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, 19, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived. But after two months of studying, the language became easy for him. School life was completely different from what he had expected and it was much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that were usually taken in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was the law, and all of the activities were done with the family rather than individually (单独地). Fred found the food too simple at first. He also missed having a car. “Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out to have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his own ideas. “I suppose I should criticize(批评) American schools,” he says. “It is far too easy for our level. But I have to say that I like it a lot. In Germany, we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many other activities. I think that maybe American schools are better in training their citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”

1. A something about this school which is different from Li Kang’s Junior High school. 2. A two things that the English teacher thinks are important to do in class. 3. B two things that the English teacher wants to improve. My First Day at Senior High
My name is Li Kang. I live in Shijiazhuang, a city not far from Beijing. It is the capital city of Heibei Province. Today is my first day at Senior High school and I’m writing down my thoughts about it.
My new school is very good and I can see why. The teachers are very enthusiastic and friendly and the classrooms are amazing. Every room has a computer with a special screen, almost as big as a cinema screen. The teachers write on the computer, and their words appear on the screen behind them. The screens also show photographs, text and information from websites. They’re brilliant! The English class is really interesting. The teacher is a very enthusiastic woman called Ms Shen. We’re using a new textbook and Ms Shen’s method of teaching s nothing like that of the teachers at my Junior High school①. She thinks that reading comprehension is important, but we speak a lot in class, too. And we have fun. I don’t think I will be bored in Ms Shen’s class②.
Today we introduced ourselves to each other. We did this in groups. Some students were embarrassed at first③ but everyone was friendly and it was really nice. Ms Shen gave us instructions and then we worked by ourselves④.
Ms Shen wants to help us improve our spelling and handwriting. We do this in a fun way, with spelling games and other activities. I like her attitude very much, and the behavior of the other students shows that they like her, too.
