Fourth-grade teacher Tori Nelson allowed one of her students to shave her head in the schoolyard, after bullies(仗势欺人者) teased him about his own buzz cut. Ms. Nelson got the idea after noticing that Matthew Finney, a shy boy from her homeroom at Winlock Miller Elementary School in Washington State, was standing outside his classroom crying and wearing a winter hat.
Ms. Nelson could see the back of his neck had been shaved, and since Matthew usually had very thick curly brown hair, she realized that he'd had a haircut over the weekend. She asked him what was wrong, and he said he'd gotten a buzz cut for the summer. But this morning, a fifth grader on the bus made fun of him, and he didn't want to come to class and get laughed at by other kids. Ms. Nelson tried to convince Matthew to come inside, but since school rules didn’t permit kids to wear hats indoors, he refused—explaining that he was afraid of showing his haircut to the other children in case they also made fun of him.

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest
problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time. 29. _______, our world is becoming much smaller. A. Thanks to science development B. Because of the rise in pollution
C. Because the earth is being polluted day and night D. Because the earth is blown away by the wind every year 30. Hundreds of years ago, life was __________ it is today.
A. much easier than B.much harder than C. as easy as D. as hard as 31. Pollution comes in many ways. We can even hear it. Here “it” means _______. A. Rubbish B. water pollution C. air pollution D. noise pollution 32. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.
B.The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth. C. The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world population does.
D. If people could go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike, it would be helpful in fighting against the problem of SO2.

A teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure. To some teenagers independence means a lot to them, and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence.
Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own. The best way for a teenager to learn lesson is through experience. I think it benefits teenagers to have freedom.
Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendship at school. Some might say that this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their school work. I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their school work. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so. Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone? Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate better with their friends.
Privacy(隐私)is another issue between parents and their teenagers. Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room. This also gives them a sense of independence. It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home. I know that my mom always goes in my room when
I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door. 33. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Kids know how to live independently. B. Some parents allow their kids no freedom. C. Kids have a dull routine every day. D. It benefits teenagers to have freedom. 34. In the opinion of the author, . A. good friendships between kids harm their school work B. it is unnecessary for a kid to have a cellphone C. kids should focus on the school work
D. parents should make it easy for kids to communicate with their friends 35. The author hopes to have her door locked in order to .
A. keep her father from reading her dairy B. protect herself from any harm C. prevent her mother entering her room D. stop thieves from going in

How to Avoid Weight Gain Over Holidays
Do you love the holidays, but hate the pounds that follow? You are not alone. Holidays are times for feasting and celebrating. Many people are worried about their weight. 36 Whether you are celebrating at the office party or sitting down for the traditional family dinner, regard eating as a time for tasting a variety of foods. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy.
Here are some tips for preventing weight gain and maintaining physical fitness: Don’t skip meals.
Before you leave home, have a small, low-fat meal or snack. 37 Control portions(份).
Use a small plate (about 10 inches) and put aside the large ones that may encourage you to “load up.” 38 Once you have your “tasting” serving, move away from the dining table. Doing so will make it less tempting (吸引人的) to be eating constantly as your appetite is inspired by the sight of food.
Begin with soup and fruit or vegetables.
Fill up beforehand with water-based soup and raw fruit or vegetables. Or drink a large glass of water before you eat to help you feel full.
Stick to physical activity.
39 A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off additional calories. 40
Dishes that look oily or creamy may have a large amount of fat. Choose lean meats. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. Use lemon juice instead of dessert or butter.
A. With proper planning, though, it is possible to keep normal weight during the holidays. B. Avoid high-fat foods.
C. This may help to avoid getting too excited before delicious food. D. You’d better remember the Dos and Don’ts for keeping fit and slim. E. Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays.
F. You had better turn your attention away from delicious foods.
G. You should be most comfortable eating an amount of food about the size of your fist. 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分45分)
